Hardwood flooring comes in two general types: Solid hardwood and engineered hardwood. Solid hardwood is the type of flooring that you will find in the historic buildings in your community. It is made of individual planks cut from a piece of wood. Each plank is slightly different than the plank cut before it because of the patterns in the wood that were created by growth over the years. That is what makes solid hardwood so appealing.
Engineered hardwood flooring is a bit different. It is constructed by placing layers of wood in an overlapping pattern using resin to secure them, and then bonding the layers using pressure and steam, a process similar to that used in making plywood. Then, a thin layer of wood is placed over each piece to create a wear layer. The top layer is then stained and polished to any number of finishes from matte to high gloss piano finish. This flooring looks just as beautiful and is almost as durable as its solid hardwood cousin, but is more budget friendly.
