Color and pattern are two of the most important ways to make any design stand out, and that certainly holds for backsplashes.

It wasn’t so long ago that they were just installed mainly to capture grease splatters and water splashes.  Now, however, they can go floor-to-ceiling or wrap around shower surrounds, fireplaces, shelves, and counters to add depth, visual interest and to create focal points.

As the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA)  says, backsplashes can evoke whimsy, drama or even relaxation.

Why are tile backsplashes so popular?

Tile can be made to look like anything, from wood to stone.  Marble bathrooms are currently trending but, when taken from the quarry, marble can be expensive.  Porcelain tile is a large format, which means fewer seams, and it's the perfect, more reasonably priced alternative for natural marble.

Many like the look of wood, but it can be damaged by excess water and shouldn’t be installed in bathrooms. A wood-look tile can be your answer.

Know, however, that some use other materials, including laminate or luxury vinyl.

Are backsplashes always used exclusively in the kitchen or bath?

No, they can be fireplace surrounds, accent walls, and borders.  You'll also see them in home offices; they are placed just behind the desk to add style and a pop of color, especially when coordinated with furnishings and accessories.

How do I make them stand out?

  • ● Use color!  Remember, they don’t have to be perfect matches for countertops or floors, but they do need to coordinate; otherwise, you’ll just have a confusing, chaotic motif.

Subway tiles are one of the most-often used ones for this kind of installation.  Formerly all-white, 3 X 6 rectangles, they now come in a wide assortment of colors ranging from cobalt blue to grassy green to sunny yellow.  They also come in various shapes and sizes which can be combined.

  • Pattern:  There’s a virtually limitless number of patterns, ranging from mosaics to beveled subway tiles that add a little sparkle.
  • Combine shapes and sizes.  No one says you must use the same one throughout one design, so combine and have fun.
