tile backsplash from About Floors n More in Jacksonville, FL

Can any type of tile be used as a backsplash?

Tile backsplashes are still number one when it comes to popularity. All ceramics can be used as a backsplash, but the specific type you use will depend upon your room's challenges, your needs, and your style. As always, tell your tile retailer exactly how you plan to use it, as there are also different grades for wall and floor use.

Is it a kitchen or bathroom backsplash or is it an accent wall?

Every tile has different levels of porosity or mold/mildew resistance and some, like terracotta, even need to be sealed for easier cleanability.  These are all set by the tile industry.

For example, porcelain, a type of ceramic is waterproof.  It can also be used outdoors. As an example, the bathroom is known as the “wettest room in the house.”  It’s steamy, watery and, especially if you have kids, there might also be a lot of wet towels thrown on the floor. Kitchen bathrooms are often behind the range, but sometimes they’re also used to catch water splashes from sinks.

Porcelain might be the answer, and this tile comes in a wide assortment of colors, patterns, and designs.  It can even be made to look like anything, including stone.

Terracotta needs sealing

These tiles are distinctive and add architectural and design interest. They are porous but if they are sealing, all worries about absorption will disappear. They look great in any room, including the living and dining areas, enclosed sun porches, etc. Brick and metal looks are especially popular this year, so terracotta can fit the bill.

Other ceramic tiles are the 4 X 4 squares with which we're all familiar.  These come glazed or unglazed, are tough (even tougher when glazed since it forms a hard outer shell), and are highly designed.

Subway tiles, those formerly all-white 3 X 6 rectangles now come in all colors, sizes, and shapes.  They can be mixed and matched to create a coordinated, unique look. Mosaics are highly decorated, tiny (sometimes as small as 1X1) tiles.  They are durable, easy to clean, and mold/mildew resistant.
